Textual Analysis Cover 1- Rhythm: Slipknot

The main feature of the magazine “Rhythm” that is immediately recognizable is a headline image of ‘Slipknot”’s drummer, Joey Jordison. The image decipits Jordison in a grotesque monster mask that’s stained with blood and had been stiched and stapled together. He is also wearing a thorn crown that has been adourned onto his scalp. This relates the strapline underneath the headliner claiming that “The metal messiah reclaims his crown”. The audience can deduce that the thorn crown is a connotation of religion (i.g Jesus’s crucifixction) from the hint given in the strapline that Jordison is like a “messiah”. This can be further explored by considering the theory that Jordison is likened as a religious figure in the “metal” genre. The stictched mask could relate to torture and imprisonment, again relating to the religious theme as a connotation of Jesus's own imprisonment. The headliner has been textured with a dirty scratch effect, giving the audience the image of the title being aged and decayed, almost like it has been scarred for battle. In the cover, certain side-titles has also been highlighted in yellow. Which draw the viewers attention to those specific areas. For example, the circle on the end of the title, it decipits the words,"Every Drummer Needs It!". So when the reader is drawn to that specific area, the words become more important; which makes the reader feel like they really do "Need It". Another example is that the strap-line above the masthead highlights "UK's Best Selling", which is obviously an advertising ploy to connivence the reader to buy the magazine with it's reputation. This connotes with the fact that the magazine has also used a famous band to promote themselves, so that the reader would be able to recognize the showcase almost immediately and should be able to make a quick judgement whether to be interested or not. It could also be to show that the magazine is good enough to have a famous band like "Slipknot".
